“In China everything is difficult, but nothing is impossible”

I decided to embark on this great adventure after the third year of Law School, rather early compared to most of my Summer Law Institute mates. This was not a disadvantage from my point of view, because it made me understand very clearly what I want from my future. The topics we studied during the Summer Law Institute were really interesting and useful, because the new frontier of law in China goes through Intellectual Property Law and Environmental Law and many of the employers in that country are looking for people with this knowledge and expertise.

But if you want to understand how China really is, because you are thinking to jump into the job market of that side of the world, one month is just enough to catch a glimpse of it. One thing is living one month in the Peking University as a foreign student and as a tourist; another one is living in a Chinese house, talking, working and eating with Chinese people round the clock! A challenge I could take on thanks to the internship opportunities the SLI offers. Indeed I chose to take a six-month internship at the China-Italy Chamber of Commerce in Beijing, which was without doubt a very formative experience.  I had to learn how to deal with Chinese and Italian businessmen, working in team with wonderful colleagues in our downtown office and manage a great variety of tasks from market analysis to event organization. At the same time, I had to deal with the everyday needs of an expat in a completely different country, to practice a completely new language, to discover an ancient and fascinating culture which is undergoing extreme changes and to witness in first person an economic boom without equal.

I came back from China full of new energy and after finishing all the exams at my home university, I decided it was time to dive again into Chinese law. Thanks to my already international background, I won a scholarship from my university to write my final Master’s dissertation at the prestigious Tsinghua University in Beijing on Chinese trademark law. This time my focus was to really deepen an aspect of Chinese law that is so relevant for foreign and local enterprises, in order to acquire valuable knowledge for my future career. I had the luck to meet outstanding professors and professionals with long working experience in the field, which is something you could never get if you write your dissertation at home. This experience, in addition to the Summer Law Institute and the internship at the Chamber of Commerce, not only gave me invaluable knowledge and refined my academic and working abilities, but it will have without doubt a great effect on my future.
